Scratchboard or "scraperboard" is a paper or board surface that is finely and uniformly layered with clay (usually white) and then coated with dense black India ink.
The technique is simple - using a blade or stylus scratch into the top layer removing the black and exposing the white underlayer. This technique is well suited for fine detail work and is favoured by many wildlife artists.
Transfer your design make a basic copy in pencil of your design on a piece of tracing paper. Cover the reverse of the tracing with chalk. Fix the tracing to the board and use a ball-point pen to transfer the design onto the Scraperboard. Use a clean piece of paper between the hand and the Scraperboard as you work
